Article VIII - Race Overview
A. Race Timing
The Race Official will begin the race clock at the start of the race and stop the clock for each team when the last team member
has crossed the finish line. Adjustments to the team's finishing time will be made to account for penalties, bonuses, checkpoint
delays, or unforeseen circumstances. All time adjustments will be approved by the Race Ombudsman and Judges to ensure
that all adjustments have been levied fairly and necessarily.
B. Team Travel
TEAM MEMBERS ARE REQUIRED TO TRAVEL WITHIN SIGHT OF EACH OTHER.
C. Venue Rankings & Finishing Classifications
Fastest overall times (following adjustments) and for each stage (e.g., a venue between two transition area ) will be
recognised. Awards will be given for teams with the fastest overall time. The SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE Champions will be the
team in that successfully traverses the course from start to finish in the fastest time. All teams recognised as successfully
completing the race must cross the finish line prior to the specified cut-off time.
D. Course Guidebook and Checkpoint Passport
Two Course Guidebooks, to include checkpoint passports and course maps, will be distributed to each team at the starting line.
The Course Guidebook will include narrative details about the course as well as special rules and regulations for the route not
found in these bylaw's.
Both copies of the Checkpoint Passport must be stamped and signed by the checkpoint official, at all checkpoints.
E. Route Adherence & Checkpoints
The Course Guidebook will give detailed guidelines regarding to what extent racers must adhere to the route specified between
checkpoints. In some instances, racers will be required to adhere to a specific trail or route in the interest of safety or
minimising ecological impact. In other instances, racers may have the freedom to select their own route between checkpoints.
Guidelines and details about the route will be clearly stated in the Guidebook.
Checkpoints need not be visited in the probe order, but missing checkpoints will result in time penalties and team exclusion
from the final rankings. Teams may backtrack to missed checkpoints as long as venue cut-off times are met, with no penalty
or exclusion from final rankings.
F. Trekking and Mountain Trekking Venues
Mountain Trekking venues are those venues requiring significant portions of off-trail cross-country travel though exposed
alpine and mountainous terrain. Mountain Trekking venues are distinguished from Trekking venues in all that exposure to the
elements tends to be more severe, and class 2 or 3 rock scrambling may be required. Travel on mountainous slopes of talus or
snow, or along exposed ridgelines, may be required. Mountain Trekking typically involve traversing the summit of a major
peak.
G. Mountain Biking Venues
Mountain Biking venues are on city roads, primitive dirt roads, single track trails or no road at all. Bike "portages" may be
required on particularly steep track, across rivers or cross-country between two tracks.
Bike towing within teams will not incur penalties.
Mechanical problems and bike repair must be handled by team members (anywhere on the course ), other teams' members
(anywhere on the course). No "outside" assistance is allowed.
H. Environmental Hazards
- Plants and Animals
There are few native plants and animals that need to be respected. This is NOT a Polar Bear danger area during summertime.
- Altitude
The SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE course will traverse mountainous terrain 0 - 1000 meter in elevation.
- Weather
Temperatures during daytime range from 10 to 18 Celsius and night time from 5 to 1 Celsius. July is a very sunny month, but frequent weather systems can bring severe winds with rain and sub-freezing temperatures, that can provide dangerous exposure.
- Mountain Terrain
The SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE characterised by difficult travel through mountainous terrain providing ample opportunity for exposure to the elements, travel through rugged county of snow and rock, and travel to remote mountain locales where
rescue may be difficult or impossible.
- Water
All the courses visit frequently water sources. All water sources in Greenland are drinkable. Water temperature in lakes and rivers are below 5 Celsius. Temperature in the fjords are 0 - 1 Celsius
I. Ecological Guidelines
The SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE Committee is committed to increase the awareness and appreciation of the Greater Greenlandic
Ecosystem through environmentally responsible adventure racing. All regulations regarding land use and minimum impact will
be strictly followed. All teams must adhere to no garbage will be left on the course under any circumstance. Garbage must be
carried out in zip-lock bags or other waste containers.
J. Penalty Summary
The following list is an example of actions that may incur time penalties from final ranking, or disqualification. The list is not
comprehensive.
- Failing to wear an unaltered race bib on the outside of clothing at all times during all venues. The only exception is for the temporary change of clothing.
- Not visiting checkpoints.
- Failing to return equipment or returning damaged equipment provided by race management.
- Failing to follow mandatory equipment requirements or safety regulations regarding the possession and use of mandatory and forbidden equipment.
- Unfair or un sportsmanlike behaviour, acts of team sabotage, wilful misconduct, or destruction of land, facilities or equipment.
- Unauthorised transportation beyond that which is allowable in the specified venues.
- Failure to follow directions provided by race management personnel, checkpoints officials or transition area officials.
- Failure to travel as a team within sight of each other at any time.
- Failure to observe minimum impact practices with respect to the transport and disposal of trash.
- Acceptance of unauthorised assistance along the course.
All penalties will be reviewed and assessed by the Race Ombudsman and Judges. Appeals to levied penalties must be
submitted in writing to the Race Ombudsman within one hour after the final cut-off time. |
