Article I - Event Organisation and Race Overview

A. ORGANISATION AND MANAGEMENT
The SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE is organised and managed by The SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE Committee, Tasiilaq, Ammassalik, East Greenland. The Mission of the SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE is to provide a racing experience that:

  • Challenges the mental, emotional and physical abilities of participants in a scenario where team-based problem solving skills are rewarded.
  • Promotes a spirit of co-operation and teamwork among race management and racing teams.
  • Advances the sport of adventure racing by ensuring a positive experience for all participants.
  • Provides an opportunity for community involvement through race officials, opportunities, partnerships and sponsorships.
  • Adheres to a minimum impact philosophy of environmental stewardship.

B. PERSONNEL

1. Race Directors
The Race Directors for the SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE will be Anders Stenbakken and Hans Christian Florian. The race directors reserve all right to accept or reject modifications to these bylaws.

2. Race Ombudsman and Judges
The Race Ombudsman is appointed by the Race Directors to act as a third-party liaison between Race Participants and the Race Directors for matters of dispute regarding the interpretation of these bylaws and rulings regarding adjustment in team finishing times and/or rankings. The Race Ombudsman will be advised by a minimum of two judges. Collectively, they will make final recommendations to the Race Directors for the following:

  • Time penalties or disqualifications levied against team(s) as a result of violations of race rules as defined herein.
  • Time bonuses awarded to team(s) as a result of special circumstances.
  • Interpretation of and a recommended decision in response to post-race appeals submitted by team(s) addressing a dispute of disqualification, time penalties levied, or bonuses awarded prior to, during or after the race.

The Race Ombudsman and Judges will not be members or employees of The SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE, or otherwise possess a conflict of interest, either financial or personal, regarding the operation of SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE.

3. Medical Director, Personnel and Operations
The medical Director, Hans Christian Florian will oversee all on-site first aid and emergency medical operations for the event, including but nor necessarily limited to the following services and provisions.
An emergency response medical team.
Mobile triage units.
Water, land and air rescue teams.
The medical operations unit for this event will be to provide first aid and emergency response service for race participants and management/operations personnel. The medical operations unit will not provide long-term medical treatment or emergency
medical care beyond the scope of field treatment.
The Medical Director has the FINAL authority (which may be delegated to specified members of the medical operations unit ) to request an interruption in race participants progress (with a corresponding time bonus awarded) or race participants´ withdrawal for the purpose of medical treatment or evaluation.
Appeals to the Race Ombudsman regarding decisions made by the medical operations unit affecting the progress or continuation of race participants may be submitted. The Medical Director will provide and response to these appeals. However, neither the Medical Director nor the Race Ombudsman/Judges has any requirement to award time penalties or bonuses in response to this type of appeal.

4. Race Official
The Race Official will be responsible for all aspects of race timing, including the recording and tracking of start time, checkpoint and transition area times, finish times and penalties levied. The Race Official will provide the final record of race timing to the Race Directors that determines final rankings and finish classifications for all Race Participants.

5. Checkpoint Officials
Checkpoint Officials will be responsible for monitoring team progress at there assigned Checkpoint. Part of this responsibility includes but is not necessarily limited to: Communicating team progress to the Race Official via 2-way radio or satellite phones as necessary.

C. OFFICIAL LANGUAGE AND UNITS
The Official Language of The SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE is Danish and English.
Units of measurement will be kilometre and meter.
The primary coordinate system used will be LATITUDE-LONGITUDE-ALTITUDE.

D. RACE DESCRIPTION

1. Format
The SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE 2008 is a multi-day, multi-venue, stage and expedition adventure race.

2. Region
The SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE 2008 will be held in East Greenland on Ammassalik Island. Start and finishing lines for the race will be in Tasiilaq (The only city in East Greenland )

3. Length and Duration
The length of SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE 2008 is approximately 250 km. and elevation 10.000+ metres to be completed within 5 days.

4. Venues
SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE 2007 will include the following venues:
Mountain Trekking
Mountain Biking, city and off road.
Glaciser Trekking
Ice fjord Paddling

5. Schedule
The SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE 2008 will be held July 17th – 26th of July 2008.


Race Schedule

July 17th Arrival to Kulusuk Airport, and transportation by boat to Tasillaq on Ammassalik Island. Welcome dinner. It's possible for teams to come earlier. (Accommodation before 17th and after 26th July will be provided for 25 EUR pr. person pr. night not including food.)
July 18th  Gear check , opportunity for the teams to try the race canoes.
19th 23rd of July SIKU EXTREME ARCTIC CHALLENGE 2008: Description will follow later.
24th July - Award ceremony. Race Party.
26th July - Departure
